As Carmen is seven now, she is more and more interested in playing adult board games like chess and word games like Scrabble and Boggle. We played Boggle for the first time yesterday. I said she could write down words in either in Spanish or English. For English, I was very pleased she wrote: meet, go, to, pat, ran. For Spanish, she wrote: fa, do, pa, ra.
"What words are those?" I asked. Pointing to her "Spanish" choice.
"Spanish words I learnt at school" she answered.
It turns out they're from the Palau reading system she used last year for learning to read Spanish. One wonders at the nonsensical use of letter combinations to teach reading in this way.
