Foreign terms used in Spanish Letters

As with the abbreviations list, I suggest you are familiar with how and when these terms are used before adding them to formal letters.

ad hoc - hecho para un propósito - arranged for this purpose; special.

ad litteram - al pie de la letra - literally

alfa y omega - el principio y el fin - the beginning and the end

a posteriori - después - afterwards

a priori - antes o anteriormente - before

curriculum vitae - historial de una persona - professional and personal history

Deo gratias - gracias a dios - thanks be to God

ex cathedra - con autoridad - said from a high authority

ex profeso - intencionadamente - intentionally

factotum - quien todo lo arregla y maneja

in fraganti - en el mismo momento - at that moment

in ilIo tempore - en aquel tiempo, hace mucho tiempo - in those times

lapsus linguae - error involuntario (al hablar) - slip of the tongue

lapsus - error involuntario - unintentional error

motu propio - por propia voluntad - of his own accord

non plus ultra - no mas allá (se emplea también como «el mejor») - 'no further' or 'the best'.

nota bene (N.B.) - explicación fuera del texto del escrito o de la carta - extra note outside author's text or letter.

rara avis - extraña persona (o especial) - strange/different person

sine die - sin fecha fija - without a fixed date

statu quo - situación determinada y concreta - the norm

ultimatum - ultima oportunidad - last opportunity

vox populi - opinión o sentir popular - popular opinion
