The use of 'tu' and 'usted' - It is difficult here to lay down rules or customs about the use of these words because of the international nature of this web site. Peninsula Spain uses the 'tu' form with children always and, usually, children to adults and often between adults after having just met in social circumstances. In South America there is often a tendency to use the 'usted' form more, even when children address their parent. I suggest that if you reply to an adult Spanish speaker on this site, you use the 'usted' form with adults at first. If you receive a personal reply, use the same form as in that letter. Among, non-native Spanish speakers, you can choose. It is highly unlikely a non-native will be offended if you use 'tu'! You will notice that I use the 'tu' form in the information throughout this site. This seems to be common in a 'commercial' English and neither am I addressing any one individual directly |
