THE NATIONAL TRUST
NEPTUNE COASTLINE CAMPAIGN
SAVING THE BEST OF OUR COASTLINE
There can be few to whom the coastline does not make an appeal, and the coasts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland have a beauty all of their own. Many stretches of this coastline are owned and protected by the National Trust - sometimes a towering cliff or craggy headland, sandy beach or cove, sometimes an island, creek or estuary.
Our coast at risk
The Trust protects 600 miles of magnificent coastline and every year, during the summer months particularly, a great number of visitors come to enjoy this natural beauty. But where our coastline can be enjoyed by people and be havens for wildlife, so it can be exploited by those who wish to use it for different and conflicting purposes. This can create serious conservation problems.
The best way to help the National Trust's work on the coast is through the Neptune Coastline Campaign. The Trust's great conservation project, now in its 37th year, raises money to acquire and preserve beautiful coastal areas - for all of us today and for future generations to come along.
The National Trust's work on the coast also includes controlling erosion, improving access and, more recently in places like the Durham coast and Orford Ness, restoring lost beauty. The Trust therefore continues to need funds, and the Neptune Coastline Campaign appeals to everyone who loves the coast to help in this task. Says Campaign Manager Richard Offen: "The coast is special. It's even more special by the smallness of this country and the number of us who live' within its shores. One third of the coast has already been developed. If the coast is to continue to give pleasure in years to come, it must be protected. Every gift, therefore, helps to ensure that another stretch of fine coastal scenery stays a reality -not a fading memory."
Recent coastal acquisitions
- A stretch of dramatic North Pembrokeshire coast in the heart of the National Park.
- Important woodland in a glorious setting on the Anglesey shore of the Menai Strait.
- Land protecting the wild and unspoiled Duddon Estuary at Sandscale Haws, Cumbria.
To achieve such successes, the Neptune Coastline Campaign depends on friends, upon many supporting organisations, upon legacies, and above all upon National Trust supporters old and new. Our target this year is to raise £3 million to acquire more beautiful coastal landscape, so that the Trust can protect it, and the wildlife which inhabits it, while giving public access and maintaining its viability for those who live and work there.
How you can help the appeal into the 21st century
- By sending a regular donation to the Neptune Coastline Campaign.
- By signing a Gift Aid declaration (this has an important tax advantage for the Trust).
- By encouraging others to support the appeal.
- By choosing to leave a legacy to help save the coastline.
We also welcome memorial gifts, for a particular stretch of coastline with which the donor wishes a name to be identified, or a gift allocated for the purchase of coastline in a specific area.
The Neptune Coastline Campaign is as important today as ever, and we hope the appeal will continue to receive all the support it needs in order to give to our unspoilt and vulnerable coastal areas the sustainable future which the National Trust is in a position to provide.
