Hello there!,
I'm writing to you from Learnit, a private language academy in Seville, Spain.
I have 13 students from 12 to 13 who wish to practise their English.
I have actually designed my own web site for these purposes. The letters of my students (and other work they are doing) is on a forum. Here is the address:
http://www.learnit.com/msg9.mv
They have written in English but I'm sure we could swop things around.
The contact address for each individual student is my own web page address accessible only by me. (They don't all have a computer so I would print out the letters so they can read them in class.) You could perhaps insert your own school's e-mail address for your students on the same forum and students exchange e-mails directly or letters could be left on the forum itself.
Have a look at the site and see what you think.
My students and I would be happy to hear from you.
My personal e-mail address is: mike@yahoo.com
Regards
Mike Jones (English teacher)
P.S The site is totally free with no commercial interest involved whatsoever.

Dear Mike
Thank you for your e-mail. I also have a group of students, who will be very interested in exchanging messages.
I am afraid that we are not quite ready yet though. This is the first time that something like this is going to be carried out in my school. In other words, if you don't mind bearing with us for a short while, we'll love to give it a go.
I had a quick look at your website and it looks great. It seems to have lots of great tools for the students to improve their writing skills.
Let me know if you don't mind waiting a little bit and, if this is the case, shall we co-ordinate how, when and what is going to happen?
Thanks!
Regards,
Stephen

Dear Stephen,
Thank you for your prompt reply about correspondence between our students.
You wisely raise questions about the logistics of e-mail correspondence. I should like to point out that I have not done this before either; in the "old days" it was done by the good old-fashioned postal service. (Still a possibility, of course, but there would be rather a long time lag between letters.
The problem is transferring classroom written correspondence onto the computer. Fortunately, I have only 13 students who are going to do this but even so it can be rather laborious copying their hand-written letters onto the computer. Perhaps your students have access to computers and can use them, which simplifies everything greatly - is that your situation? In my case, some students have computers at home but most have parents with access to one. I shall ask those parents to copy their child's letter onto a floppy or send it to me by E-mail.
You say you are not yet ready to do this yet. In Spain, the summer holidays come early (about 20th June) and they are long (to the middle of September). Personally, I would like to get something going soon as there are less than 4 months of the school year left. When do you think you could get things ready for?
Hoping to hear from you soon and thanks again for such a prompt reply.
Regards,
Mike

Hello there!
Sorry for not replying earlier but you know, too much paper work. I expect to be running by next week (letters to parents and an e-mail address for the group is all that is required - I think).
My students are 13 years old with a very basic knowledge of Spanish. What do you think about them e-mailing in English and yours in Spanish? I know this is not ideal but, from my point of view, I want them to realise that not only MFL teachers speak "foreign", that not everybody speaks English and, in particular, to enhance their interest for languages.
I'll talk to you soon. Till then,
Stephen

Dear Stephen,
Regarding my students write in Spanish and yours in English, yes, that is fine. Though I may ask mine to write in English too sometimes.
Some of my students have quite a good level of English but I agree that it is very beneficial for them to receive letters in English; in that way they get exposure to authentic language.
Kind regards
Mike

Dear Mike,
Yes, that's fine by me. I'll keep you updated on what's going on, ok?
Regards,
Stephen.
