TEMA: Un padre critica la decisión del colegio de su hijo de llevar a los niños para ver a Santa Claus en un gran almacén (Rackams) a principios de noviembre. En la segunda carta el director contesta...

Dear Mr Derrick

I am writing to express my disappointment over Friday's excursion to Rackhams to visit Father Christmas. In my opinion Xmas seems to be beginning earlier and earlier every year and I was shocked to hear of the proposed visit when we are only just in November.

The giving and receiving of presents is an important part of our culture and one which I readily encourage my son to partake in and learn more about. However I do not see the 'roll in -roll out, conveyer belt 'Father Christmas' offered at Rackhams (whose ulterior motives can be only to increase their wealth), as playing any role in this development. Instead I see it as part of the latest sly way in which big business is ramming itself down our throats. Children are already being constantly bombarded with messages to buy! buy! buy!, on the television, at the cinema, even walking down the street. Is nothing sacred? Are not even our schools a sanctuary from this?

I do not wish to appear an interfering parent. I am a teacher myself and sympathise fully with those who would rather see the job of teaching being left to those who are qualified to do so, rather than interfering governments and parents. However, at least it could be argued that these forces have the education and welfare of our children at heart. Companies like Walkers crisps, Tescos and Rackams do not. Their interest is purely to increase their wealth.

Yours sincerely

Nick Wilson.

P.S. Of course, I did have the option of not signing the form, and not allowing my son to go on the trip. However, what would have happened then when my son waited at school for the others to return with tales of Father Xmas. Perhaps I would have been doing more harm than good. I feel strongly that the trip should not have been arranged at all.

Dear Mr Wilson

Thank you for you letter concerning the Reception and Year 1 trip to Rackham's last Friday. Whilst I understand the points raised in your letter, I would like to explain some of the wider considerations that informed my decisions.

Earlier that week 1 was contacted by Ragdoll productions. Their aim (and they were clear and up-front about this) was to see how child friendly and pushchair friendly the grotto they had designed in Rackham's was. To do this they obviously needed children. To make the trip exciting and interesting they were prepared to offer the children the experience free of charge and in return they would gain valuable market research information.

Now whilst early November is very early, I am also aware that there are a number of children in both Reception and Year 1 of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary School who will have a limited experience of Christmas. There are children who are unlikely to experience a festive environment, a grotto or possibly even Father Christmas. For children such as these the experience on offer would be invaluable, it could become a life-long memory. For others (children perhaps -. like Andre) it is something they will experience in many different ways, shapes or forms ayer many years to come.

From the point of view of the visit itself, staff do try to make this as educational an experience as possible. The language, the interaction the journey as well as the experience itself is drawn upon both now and in the future, as work on Christmas topics develop.

Bearing in mind these factors I felt that our children would gain as much if not more from the experience as Ragdoll Productions, and that is why I agreed to the trip. As you say at the end of your letter we did offer parents the option of whether they wanted their child to take part or not, but as you also quite rightly say it is difficult to deny your child such an opportunity especially when all their friends go.

Whilst respecting the concerns expressed in your letter I do hope you appreciate the decision was made with the best interests of our children at heart. I can assure you we were not simply jumping at a chance of a free present for the children or pandering to whims and desires of any big business who care to dangle a carrot under our noses.

If you would like further information or would like to discuss the matter further, I would be only too happy to meet with you.

Yours sincerely

J. Derrick (Headteacher)
