Arm our Police

(Ver respuesta abajo,,,)

Dear Sir

I would like to ask your readers whether or not they think that the British policeman should be armed like his or her American counterpart. The escalation of violent crime which seems to be accelerating on an exponential curve needs to be stopped. We have Jack Straw on the one hand releasing murderers from prison and wasting millions of pounds trying to recruit more policeman.

What we need is more really serious punitive measures: no privileges in prisons and a strong zero tolerance message that is backed up with action. Not policies implemented by out of touch people.

When I read that a 20 year-old man has been stabbed to death in front of bis mother, in their own home, I think it is time for the Home Secretary to realise that we all value our lives very highly. If murderers can walk into our homes and kill us it is time to reintroduce the death penalty. By the same token, how can a man like Jack Straw expect a police officer to walk in very dangerous places with no real defence or deterrent. He should lead by example. Put on a police officer's uniform and see what is happening to the police and why they are probably leaving the force.

Officers local to where I live have been hospitalised by local thugs. I live in a small market town. I would be seriously worried about walking in the cities at night time.

What will it take to make Jack Straw realise that tougher measures are needed as well as more police. If he has not got the backbone to implement these measures then I suggest that he resigns.

Make our police safe from the scum of society and at least give them a small side arm type weapon

I would like to hear anyone's opinion or suggestions. 1 will compile all suggestions sent to me. 1 will then send them to Jack Straw and all of the newspapers listed in the current Willings Press Guide. This should be enough to get TV, radio and Internet coverage.

A final thought -if burglaries are happening in the UK every 30 seconds your name is on the list and your life is in potential danger. Think about it!

Dear Sir

My response to Stephen Jones is that I am emphatically opposed to his suggestion that British policemen should be armed, as are their American counterparts.

Is he really envious of America, where there is a much higher level of violent crime, per capita, than there is here and gun law seems to have taken over? A policeman with a gun sets an example to society at large and provides criminals with a sense of perverted justification that they may carry a gun too.

Armed policemen would seem to be an answer to violent crime, but in practice it is not so. The violence merely escalates.

Long may our unarmed, friendly bobby on the streets be an example to the gun-crazed people of America!

Yours faithfully

John Smith
