Dear Editor,

It is a strange coincidence that the 11th September, the never-to-be-forgotten date of the horrific terrorist attacks on New York  and Washington, was the anniversary of a previous act of extreme violence which was supported by America.  On that date, in 1973, General Pinochet overthrew the democratically elected communist government of Chile and its president, Salvador Allende, was murdered.  It was a coup involving a great deal of bloodshed and terror, recently highlighted when the trial of Pinochet by an international court was being considered.

For many years, America has interfered in the domestic politics of other countries.  The Republic of Cuba, for instance, which recently issued an official statement expressing its grief and sadness at the terrorist events that took place in the United States, has for 40 years endured a crippling trade blockade by the US.  It would be a welcome gesture of goodwill if, in respect for Cuba's sovereignty and independence, this blockade could be lifted at last.

Yours sincerely,

John Witham
