Dear Sir   

War sacrifices doctrines, truth and integrity as well as human life.  The values for which we are supposedly fighting are sacrificed.

The initiator of a supposed religious war is a traitor to true religion, but those who answer him in kind reduce themselves to his level, accept his values, and commit us to the spiral of violence ...

I was dismayed by the events of 11 September:  I am dismayed by the violent response which they have successfully provoked, whether or not it is called a crusade;  dismayed by the contradictory combination of massive punishment raids and humanitarian relief;  dismayed by the coalition which includes some of the most illegitimate and illiberal governments in the world;  dismayed by the further side-lining of the United Nations;  dismayed by the likely backlash in escalating terrorism.
