     Dear Peter Davison,

Quelle joie!  The other day, my wife and I felt privileged to be able to see, on the normal cinema circuit, a film produced in France.  Amelie, presented in French with English sub-titles, is a delightful fantasy which gives a fascinating glimpse into the culture and way of life of our nearest continental neighbour.  For us, it was, indeed, a great joy.

If only there were more European films of this calibre on general release in this country!  Living on our sceptred isle (set in a none too silver sea), some of us do tend to be a bit xenophobic about Europe and such films as Amelie help us to remember, and be glad, that this is where our roots are, after all - despite our saturation with American films ever since the industry began.

Films available each week on the standard TV channels, average 33 from the US, 7 from the UK and just one occasionally from continental Europe - usually in the middle of the night.  Through the popular medium of film, we get a good insight into the cultural, emotional and everyday life of a country and, as a bonus for language students (of all ages), an invaluable aid to comprehension skills.

If any of your readers have any influence at all on the choice of the films we see, I appeal for many more European films.  In the meantime, I thoroughly recommend Amelie to anyone who has not seen it yet!  Vive l'entente cordiale!

     Yours sincerely,

     Henry Binterton
