Dear Mr and Mrs Worthington

For fifteen years I have worked as Reserves Manager for the RSPB in the south of England. In all that time I can honestly say that Brading Marshes is the best wetland in southern England, that is not already a nature reserve, I have come across. And, with your help, it has the potential to become a truly wonderful RSPB nature reserve.

Brading Marshes is found on the floodplains of the River Yar on the Isle of Wight, and for sheer diversity of habitats and wildlife it is second to none. A rich mosaic of ancient woodland, flower-filled meadows, coastal lagoons and the largest surviving areas of reedbed and grazing marsh on the island, Brading Marsh is is a place of rare beauty.

In summer, bearded tits, with their distinctive 'pinging' call, may be seen flitting in and out of the reeds. Brading Marshes is the only place for them on the Isle of Wight. With 19 acres of reed bed, it is also the only part of the island where marsh harriers breed. In recent years bitterns have spent the winter here.

One of the UK's most endangered mammals, the water vole flourishes in the ditches that criss-cross the marshes. Globally threatened Starlet Sea Anemones can be found in the lagoons stretching out to Bembridge Harbour. And, with no introduced grey squirrels to disturb them, dormice and the native red squirrels, rare on mainland England, survive in good numbers among the ancient pollarded oaks and hazel coppice woodland.

Will you help us to keep this rare and beautiful place alive for the birds and other wildlife that depend on it?

The current owners recognise that they cannot manage their land to achieve its full potential as a nature reserve. But they would like to see it in safe hands for all time, to protect the delightful countryside and wealth of wildlife that they have looked after so carefully. They have therefore agreed to wait until 31 August, before completing a sale, to give us the opportunity to raise the purchase price.

With your help, we can buy Brading Marshes to protect and enhance this remarkable place for future generations of wildlife and people.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has already generously agreed to fund part of the purchase price. English Nature has also offered a contribution. But we still need to raise £500,000 to buy Brading Marshes and implement our first five-year management plan. I have enclosed a leaflet to give you an idea of the birds and other wildlife that will benefit from our management plans. Will you please make a donation, to help us reach our target?

Brading Marshes is already recognised for its conservation value, but it is only by purchasing this land that we can ensure it achieves its full potential. If only we can secure this wonderful place, we know we have the expertise to make it even better for birds, other wildlife and people forever. Please help us to grasp this opportunity by making a gift today.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely
