Spanish "de" and English "of" compared
Below are examples of three different types of English possessives. Note that in all three possessive types Spanish uses the "de" preposition.
1) Saxon genitive: the use of 's or the plural s' for people and animals:
My sister's house La casa de mi hermana
María's birthday El cumpleaños de María
My mother's brother's dog's bone El hueso del perro del hermano de mi madre
The Americans' car El coche de los americanos
Though also in some expressions and often with time phrases:
I'm at my wits' end (No literal translation in Spanish so no de here) Estoy desesperado/a (No sé más qué hacer)
Last week's meeting La reunión de la semana pasada
Today's menu El plato del día
Three months' work Un trabajo de tres meses
2) Titles and names of places, buildings etc. is when we see the English of:
The Queen of England La reina de Inglaterra
The House of Lords La Cámara de los Lores
The House of Commons La Cámara de los Comunes
The Lord of the Rings El señor de los anillos
3) Saxon genitive not usually used with inanimate things and one of the nouns becomes an adjective:
A Pepsi employee Un empleado de Pepsi
The city streets Las calles de la ciudad
The car door La puerta del coche
The door knob El pomo de la puerta
It is grammatically possible to say all the above with prepositional of eg.:
The knob of the door (etc)
But this is not usual unless the phrase becomes a title or is a formal English:
The Book of Job El Libro de Job
or the adjectival noun is long:
The long and hilly streets of San Francisco Las calles largas y empinadas de San Francisco
